The Chicago White Sox faced a tough 12-2 defeat against the New York Yankees on Tuesday, with starting pitcher Davis Martin acknowledging, “things kind of unraveled pretty quickly.” Key defensive errors by Chase Meidroth and Jacob Gonzalez contributed to a challenging four-run second inning, and Martin found it difficult to recover. He exited after just retiring one batter in an overwhelming six-run fourth inning. This loss marked the worst for the Sox since they were defeated 14-2 by the Milwaukee Brewers on opening day.
Martin expressed the significance of playing in New York, stating, “It’s not like this is some random stadium. This is New York. This is a hard place to play. It’s a great place for us to learn how to play in big-time spots on the road. We have dreams and aspirations of making the playoffs this year, and you don’t play all those games at home. We’ve got to learn how to win on the road. It’s a process. It’s June. Continue to learn and make these adjustments and learn now so we can be ready to go come September or October.”
Sox infielder Luisangel Acuña took the mound in the eighth inning, delivering 40 mph curveballs, one of which José Caballero hit for the Yankees’ fourth home run. “Obviously, some things in there we have to clean up,” Sox manager Will Venable noted.
During the game, Martin, with a 9-3 record, allowed nine runs on eight hits and three walks in just over three innings, sending his ERA soaring from 2.41 to 3.31. Not too long ago, his ERA was 2.00, but difficult games against the Minnesota Twins and Yankees surrounded a successful six-inning shutout against the Atlanta Braves. Venable described the performance as “an aberration.”
Martin maintained confidence in his ability to bounce back. “I’ve done it once before after the Twins outing, and I can do it again,” he said. “This start by no means defines me or my season.” Though it was his worst showing of the season, including home runs allowed to Spencer Jones, Ben Rice, and Paul Goldschmidt, Martin focused on moving forward.
Offensively, the Sox struggled after Andrew Benintendi hit a solo home run off Gerrit Cole in the first inning. They didn’t see another hit until Tristan Peters singled in the sixth, by which point they trailed 11-1. Mistakes in the third inning began the unraveling, as Meidroth failed to tag J.C. Escarra, who then doubled. Gonzalez moved too far to his right trying to field Anthony Volpe’s grounder, leaving Meidroth without a target at first. “Learning experience,” Venable said of Gonzalez. “He probably won’t do that again. He’ll learn from it.”
Martin struggled, surrendering a run-scoring hit to Cody Bellinger and walking three others in the inning. “I pride myself in, if guys are going to pick me up, I’ve got to pick them up,” Martin remarked. He found it frustrating to lose control, but looks ahead, saying, “I looked at (Meidroth) and nodded my head like ‘I’ve got you,’ and it just didn’t work out tonight. Most nights I feel like I’m going to pick them up. Same with (Gonzalez). It’s just a bad night. Go to sleep. Wake up. New day tomorrow.”
