Attorney General Sues Texas Governor Over Extradition
The Minnesota Attorney General, Keith Ellison, has launched a legal challenge against Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The lawsuit filed on Tuesday accuses Governor Abbott of refusing to extradite Christian Castro, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.
Castro faces charges for allegedly shooting an immigrant during the Trump administration’s intensified immigration operations, specifically during an initiative called Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis. The incident has brought significant legal attention amid heightened scrutiny of immigration enforcement actions from that period.
The dispute over extradition underscores the tensions between state jurisdictions and federal law enforcement practices. Castro is currently detained in a Texas jail, adding complexity to the process of legal accountability across state lines.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty joined Ellison in addressing the media during a news conference held in St. Paul. Both officials emphasized the importance of ensuring justice and the rule of law, particularly in matters involving law enforcement officials.
