Community Mourns After Tragic School Shooting in Bend, Oregon
The Bend-La Pine Schools district in Oregon is experiencing profound sorrow following a mass shooting that claimed the lives of three young students and a teacher. The district expressed deep gratitude for the bravery of those who risked their lives during the attack.
“Our hearts are broken,” the district shared in a social media post. “We are forever grateful for their response to the attack.” Among the victims was 25-year-old Megan Lambert, a special education teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School, who had just begun her first teaching position in the district this fall.
In the tragedy, Becky Drury, an inclusion educational assistant, was injured but is recovering. The district commended Lambert and Drury for their courageous actions during the attack. “She will be missed beyond words,” the district stated in memory of Lambert. “We continue to wrap our arms around Becky Drury,” they added, recognizing her bravery.
Authorities identified Rhoam Summer, 5, as one of the young victims, along with two other children, ages 8 and 11, whose families have chosen to keep their names private. A 7-year-old girl also sustained injuries and is currently recovering, police confirmed.
A memorial outside Silver Rail Elementary School has drawn mourners leaving flowers and messages of support in chalk. The community is grappling with the loss and gathered to honor Lambert and the innocent children who lost their lives.
Kaylub Giamanco, a father of two students at Silver Rail, has been praised for his heroic actions during the attack. On his lunch break, Giamanco intervened by pursuing the gunman into the school after witnessing the teenager enter with a shotgun. Armed with a legally secured .40-caliber pistol, Giamanco confronted and fatally shot the attacker.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz highlighted the swift response from both citizens and staff. He applauded the decisive actions of an unnamed teacher who attempted to disarm the gunman by throwing a cellphone and physically tackling him. “The teacher… was willing to stand and fight for her children,” stated Krantz. “She almost certainly helped avoid more bloodshed.”
