The Atlanta Dream’s lead with just over three minutes left in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals slipped away as they failed to score again. As a result, the Golden State Valkyries secured a victory at Chase Center, closing the game on a 7-0 run to win 68-64.
Gabby Williams was instrumental in this comeback. She scored 26 points, including making six free throws in the final two minutes and 15 seconds. Despite trailing by seven points earlier in the fourth quarter, Golden State managed to take a 1-0 series lead.
The Dream struggled offensively in the final quarter, scoring just eight points. They did not manage to make a field goal after Jordin Canada’s jumper with 4:23 remaining.
Gabby Williams scored 26 points and made crucial free throws, leading the team to victory.
Notably, the Valkyries’ defense executed a key sequence when trailing 62-59. Veronica Burton blocked a layup attempt by Canada, while Kiah Stokes denied Angel Reese on the same play. Tiffany Hayes secured the rebound, passing to Williams for a layup that reduced the gap to one point.
Stokes contributed with five blocks, crucially turning a potential five-point deficit into a single-point game. Although Rhyne Howard extended Atlanta’s lead to three with two free throws, Williams responded with four of her own, putting Golden State ahead 65-64 with 1:18 left.
Despite opportunities, the Dream couldn’t capitalize. Angel Reese and Naz Hillmon’s efforts for Atlanta were futile. Allisha Gray missed a layup after Reese’s initial steal, and Hillmon missed a three-pointer following the second steal.
Stokes added a free throw with 23.8 seconds remaining, making the score 66-64. After Gray missed a potential go-ahead three, Williams’ final two free throws with 4.1 seconds left secured the win.
Fans expressed dissatisfaction with officiating in the closing minutes, chanting complaints. Regarding free throws, Atlanta had attempted 17 through three quarters compared to Golden State’s 5. The Dream finished with 18-for-21 at the line, while the Valkyries were 11-for-16.
A significant moment occurred with 3:12 left, as Howard drove to the basket and Burton was fouled. Despite a review, officials did not assess a hostile act, and Howard made her free throws, giving Atlanta a brief 64-61 lead, their final points.
The defense resumed their presence soon after when Hayes tried stealing the ball. Burton blocked a shot by Gray, and no foul or review was conducted, leading to more crowd complaints.
Despite their strong defense, both teams allowed a combined 81 points in the first half. Reese led Atlanta’s charge early, scoring 11 of her 14 points, contributing to an 11-0 run.
Williams dominated the second quarter, scoring 16 of her first-half points. She shot 6-for-9, including three three-pointers, giving Golden State a 42-39 halftime advantage.
Golden State’s head coach, Natalie Nakase, expressed her frustration during the break, calling for better defense. However, the team’s struggles shifted to offense in the third quarter, managing just nine points. This enabled Atlanta to regain a 56-51 lead heading into the fourth.
Allisha Gray led the Dream with 19 points, contributing crucial jumpers late in the third. However, post-halftime, both teams combined for only 51 points. Williams’ offensive power was pivotal, while Atlanta failed to find a solution in their closing moments.
