The eastern state of Manipur in India is experiencing a new surge of ethnic violence. Recent incidents of violent ambushes, abductions, and protests have become common in this troubled region.
In recent weeks, conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities has intensified, now involving a third group, the Nagas. Clashes have erupted between Kukis and Nagas in the hilly areas of Manipur, sparked by disputes over residency and territorial control. These violent confrontations have resulted in the deaths of over a dozen individuals, including three Kuki church leaders who were killed on May 13. Numerous kidnappings have been reported as well.
This spike in violence marks the most severe in the area since May 2023 when fights between the Kukis and Meiteis claimed hundreds of lives. In response, India’s government deployed paramilitary forces to the region, effectively dividing the state into fragmented sections.
The Meiteis, predominantly located in the capital city of Imphal and the adjacent plains, remain embroiled in conflict with the Kuki community, who primarily reside in the hills. Both sides have created secure zones behind established battle lines, displacing tens of thousands of individuals. Each group often blames the other for the recurring violence.
The ongoing conflict underscores the deep-seated tensions and challenges of maintaining peace in Manipur, highlighting the plight of its residents who continue to live amidst turmoil.
