Ernie Johnson to Retire from ‘Inside the NBA’ After This Season

On Wednesday, Ernie Johnson, a longtime broadcaster and host of ‘Inside the NBA,’ revealed that he will retire at the end of the season. Johnson announced his decision in a video, noting that after turning 70 last summer, it seemed an appropriate time to conclude his career. He expressed amazement at having spent 37 years in a job he feels privileged to have had.

‘This will be my last season. Totally my decision. It’s just time. It’s been an honor to share so many nights, decades, actually, at the desk, with my brothers, Kenny [Smith], Charles [Barkley], and [Shaquille O’Neal], and with our production crews who are so talented and devoted,’ Johnson stated in his message.

Johnson shared that he has been dealing with heart issues over the past two years and emphasized the importance of focusing on his health and spending time with loved ones. He indicated that while he plans to reduce his workload, he will continue with projects for CBS and TNT, such as March Madness broadcasts.

During an episode of ESPN’s ‘Inside the NBA,’ co-host Charles Barkley became visibly emotional over Johnson’s retirement announcement. ‘That was tough,’ Barkley remarked, describing the honor it has been to work with Johnson for over 26 years. Barkley praised Johnson as a leader and a remarkable person, thanking him for his influence over the years.

Barkley also mentioned his own plans to retire from broadcasting after the season. The decisions have deeply affected their colleagues and fans alike. Johnson received messages of support and gratitude from NBA stars and former colleagues, recognizing his lasting impact.

Despite Johnson’s upcoming retirement, fans can still enjoy ESPN’s NBA coverage throughout the season, with upcoming games featuring the Philadelphia 76ers against the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder facing the Dallas Mavericks.
