Recently, the death of 87-year-old María del Carmen Abascal, known as “Maricarmen,” has magnified a political crisis in Spain. Her tragic passing has intensified protests against the rising housing costs that have been affecting numerous citizens and prompted an early election.
Maricarmen was evicted from her home in Madrid, where she had lived for nearly seventy years. Her eviction gained widespread attention when images surfaced showing her being carried out on a stretcher. She was confined to a wheelchair, making the scene deeply moving and significant in highlighting the ongoing housing crisis in Spain.
The eviction took place on September 23. Nationwide protests followed, turning Maricarmen into a symbol of the housing affordability issues pressing on many Spaniards. The street where her eviction occurred was cordoned off by police, who also had to remove demonstrators trying to prevent her removal. The incident drew substantial national attention and discourse.
The real estate company responsible had intended to lease her apartment at a much higher price. In response to public pressure, they later agreed to let Maricarmen return, but she passed away before she could move back. The cause of her death remains undisclosed.
In reaction, demonstrators assembled outside Spain’s Parliament and gathered in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol square to honor her memory. They participated in a minute of silence and chanted slogans asserting that the fight against housing injustice persists.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences, addressing Maricarmen’s family and supporters. Meanwhile, the leader of the conservative opposition, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, also offered his respects, urging political groups to avoid exploiting her death for political purposes.
The unfortunate series of events has added urgency to the demand for changes in Spain’s rental policies, coinciding with the country’s upcoming election. Maricarmen’s situation continues to stir public sentiment, calling for immediate action to tackle housing challenges in Spain.
