Canadian officials have reported fatalities and injuries following a significant incident that led to a large fire at one of the country’s busiest military bases, Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta. Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed the occurrence but did not specify the number of casualties.
McGuinty expressed sorrow over the tragic incident, stating, “I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base.” The fire remained active as of Saturday evening, and McGuinty noted that such an event is unprecedented in recent memory.
The fire extended beyond the military base into the surrounding area, according to local authorities. Despite the spread, no evacuation orders had been issued at the time.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the incident publicly, expressing his condolences and acknowledging the severity of the fire at CFB Wainwright. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also commented on social media, describing the fire as significant and tragic, affecting military personnel.
The incident has seen a coordinated response from the Canadian Armed Forces, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and local emergency services. McGuinty stated, “The Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defence, and partners across the federal government are working with the Alberta government and municipal authorities to mobilize all necessary support.”
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, located about 130 miles east of Edmonton, had around 1,310 military and civilian personnel as of a recent census. The nearby town of Wainwright has a population of approximately 6,600 residents.
The cause of the incident is not immediately clear. Further details are expected as responses and investigations continue.
