East Rutherford, N.J. — The France-Senegal game on Tuesday afternoon was a showcase of Kylian Mbappé’s talent, with the forward initially struggling but ultimately shining. During the early stages, Mbappé seemed off his game, missing passes and opportunities. However, as the match progressed, frustration turned into triumph.
In the 64th minute, Michael Olise threaded a pass to Mbappé as he approached the Senegalese net. Despite lunging for the ball, Mbappé couldn’t quite control it, expressing his near-miss with a pinched gesture. France had only managed one shot in the first half, which wasn’t on target.
Minutes later, Olise spotted Mbappé making another move and curled a pass around four defenders. Mbappé converted it smoothly, shifting the momentum of the game to favor France with a 1-0 lead. He later added another goal that secured the 3-1 victory, bringing his career international goals to 58, surpassing Olivier Giroud as France’s all-time top scorer. With 14 career World Cup goals, Mbappé is tied for the third highest in history.
“People will criticize him,” French coach Didier Deschamps remarked. “He’s iconic. Though he might have off games, he significantly impacts and leads his team to victory.” France, ranked No. 2 globally before this match, aimed for a repeat of their 2018 World Cup win.
Initially, Senegal set the pace with a physical style, creating more chances, while France seemed less threatening. Mbappé was notably absent from key action, evidenced by his mere 14 touches in the first half, as reported by ESPN.
“His performance mirrored the team’s,” Deschamps noted. Mbappé was precise and lacked accuracy initially, though Deschamps dismissed any mental hurdles. He trusts Mbappé’s understanding of World Cup pressure.
In the second half, France’s urgency increased, resulting in a 10-1 shots advantage over Senegal. Olise, playing for Bayern Munich, skillfully set up multiple opportunities for Mbappé. In the 57th minute, Olise found Mbappé, who shot, only to be denied by Édouard Mendy’s save. Frustration turned to celebration in the 66th minute when Olise assisted Mbappé’s successful goal.
Mbappé wasn’t finished. During stoppage time, despite Senegal scoring, Mbappé delivered from 30 yards, piercing the top left corner. Senegal’s goalkeeper Mendy couldn’t stop it, leading to a jubilant celebration.
“I hope he continues this performance in the tournament,” remarked Adrian Rabiot, a French teammate. With upcoming matches, Mbappé aims to surpass Klose’s World Cup goals record.
Post-match, Mbappé appeared briefly before the media, addressing a few questions in French before departing. He left with a simple farewell, ready for future challenges in the tournament.
