President Donald Trump faced mixed results in the latest round of Republican primaries. While his endorsed candidates won key Senate races, some of his choices met obstacles in Georgia.
Georgia’s Gubernatorial Runoff
In Georgia, Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones, endorsed by Trump, lost the Republican primary runoff for the governor’s race to Rick Jackson. Jackson is a prominent health care executive. This marked another setback for Trump after his backing of Representative Randy Feenstra in Iowa also resulted in a loss earlier in June.
Victories in Other Contests
Despite these losses, Trump’s endorsements saw success elsewhere. Representative Mike Collins, known for his strong stance against immigration, won his primary contest. He will challenge Senator Jon Ossoff, signaling a competitive race ahead.
Trump’s Senate picks had better fortunes in staunchly Republican states like Alabama and Oklahoma, where his candidates prevailed.
Georgia Republicans and Trump’s Influence
The defeat of Burt Jones highlighted that Georgia Republicans are willing to challenge Trump’s influence. Jones had previously collaborated with Trump supporters in efforts to dispute the 2020 presidential election outcome. Additionally, a candidate denying the election results was defeated in the runoff for Georgia’s secretary of state position, indirectly countering Trump’s unverified claims about the 2020 vote.
Trump’s turbulent relationship with Georgia Republicans dates back to 2020 when both Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger upheld the state’s election results. Furthermore, Trump’s selected candidates for Georgia’s Senate seats in early 2021 lost their runoff elections, a development that helped kickstart Jon Ossoff’s political career.
