Italy is set to deploy 500 troops with expanded police powers following violent riots over the weekend. This is a more direct military approach than France, where weeks of unrest have led authorities to bolster their security measures.
Videos of the chaos in France and Italy spread across social media, capturing violent confrontations between demonstrators and police. Buildings burned and storefronts were looted as police struggled to contain the violence, often forced to retreat.
In Paris, police faced hundreds of demonstrators, unable to make arrests. They resorted to using rubber-bullet launchers and grenades to control the advancing rioters, gradually retreating in the face of overwhelming numbers. Similarly, in Milan, Italian police retreated when confronted by hundreds of young rioters hurling explosive firecrackers, metal barriers, and glass bottles in their bid to occupy a public square.
A Fox News Digital investigation revealed that socialist groups, Islamic advocacy organizations, and environmental activists were involved in the French riots. Analysts estimate over $1 billion in damages. Videos showed foreign flags among the demonstrators, including Palestinian flags in France and an Albanian flag in Milan.
Italian reports indicated that many rioters in Milan were first and second-generation migrants.
With more riots expected this weekend, France and Italy are reinforcing security through their armed forces after days of unrest. France’s military police, the gendarmes, were involved in containing last weekend’s riots. On Tuesday, the interior minister stated that France will deploy the Sentinelle force to substitute for interior security forces, allowing police and gendarmes to focus on maintaining order.
France’s upcoming presidential elections have some political observers suggesting that the migrant-heavy riots might benefit Marine Le Pen, a leading right-wing candidate.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that 500 troops will deploy in Milan. The deputy prime minister stated the troops would have police powers, indicating their potential role in managing rioters.
