Kristi Noem’s Transition and Controversies: A Detailed Overview
Former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem extended her regards to South Dakota as pheasant hunting season began. She posted a photo on X, showcasing her in hunting gear holding a gun near a dog. This image stirred numerous comments online expressing concern.
The post coincided with the news of Noem’s tenure as special envoy to the Shield of the Americas coalition ending. The U.S. State Department confirmed this, indicating the role was a planned six-month assignment. Noem continues as a senior adviser to the State Department, maintaining her involvement in the Shield of the Americas initiative.
Noem, who served as governor of South Dakota from 2019 to 2025, worked as President Donald Trump’s DHS secretary after her gubernatorial term. A notable Trump supporter and hunter, she was once seen as a potential running mate for Trump in 2024. This speculation diminished after revealing a controversial incident in her memoir, in which she described shooting her dog, Cricket.
Allegations reported by The Daily Mail added personal life intrigue. The report claimed her husband, Bryon Noem, had a secret life involving communication with fetish models, leading to Noem filing for divorce.
End Of Special Envoy Role
The ending of Noem’s special envoy role to the Shield of the Americas was publicly announced on Friday. This Trump-era security measure focused on the Western Hemisphere. It aimed to counteract drug trafficking, transnational criminal networks, and illegal migration. As an envoy, Noem engaged with regional leaders, reporting to Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. She continues to contribute as a senior adviser, ensuring continuity in her duties.
Noem shared a comment from the Department of State underscoring her ongoing commitment. “The Special Envoy to the Shield of the Americas role was always a six-month appointment,” she posted, affirming her ongoing role as a Senior Adviser.
Controversial Social Media Post
On Saturday, Noem posted about pheasant hunting, which sparked concern due to the dog’s presence in the photo. “Happy Opener, South Dakota!” she wrote, emphasizing the tradition of hunting: “Pheasant hunting is part of who we are. It’s a tradition worth passing on to our kids and grandkids.” Included in the post was an image of Noem wearing hunting gear with a rifle next to a dog resembling a Vizsla, receiving over 2.2 million views by Saturday afternoon. Feedback highlighted apprehension for the dog’s safety with comments like “Save the dog” and “Please don’t kill him.”
Pheasant hunting in South Dakota occurs from October 17 to January 31, with dogs aiding hunters by locating and signaling birds, then flushing them into flight for easier targeting.
The Dog Controversy
Noem’s memoir, No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward, revealed a dramatic incident involving her dog Cricket, published by The Guardian in April 2024. Noem detailed shooting Cricket after attacks on chickens and an aggressive encounter. Deeming the dog “untrainable,” Noem expressed her dislike for Cricket. Facing backlash, she defended the decision on Fox News, citing child safety concerns against a dangerous dog.
