Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment have announced that Mel Gibson’s influential 2004 film, “The Passion of the Christ,” will return to theaters nationwide this September. This release comes ahead of its sequel, set for 2027. The film originally depicted the final 12 hours of Jesus’ life, leading to his crucifixion, and will now be remastered in 4K and Dolby Atmos sound.
The movie will be shown from September 10 through September 17, offering audiences a fresh experience. Additionally, viewers will see an exclusive preview of the sequel, “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One,” which will be released on May 6, 2027. The second part is scheduled for release on May 25, 2028.

Kevin Grayson, president of worldwide distribution for Lionsgate, stated that the film remains an extraordinary theatrical experience, turning into a powerful cultural and faith phenomenon for many. The 20-year anniversary gives both original viewers and a new generation the opportunity to see it in a rejuvenated format.
“The Passion of the Christ” earned over $610 million globally on a budget of $30 million, garnering Academy Award nominations for makeup, score, and cinematography. Despite its success, the film stirred controversy due to its graphic violence and subject matter. It held the record for highest-grossing domestic R-rated film until 2024’s “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
Lionsgate has released a new theatrical trailer to mark the film’s return. Tickets became available for purchase starting July 24. More details on participating theaters can be found on Fathom Entertainment’s website.
Jim Caviezel played Jesus of Nazareth in the original movie. However, Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen will assume the role for the sequels due to challenges with de-aging technology and scheduling issues. Mariela Garriga will portray Mary Magdalene, replacing Monica Bellucci.

Mel Gibson has emphasized that the upcoming sequels will delve into the spiritual battle for humanity’s soul. He regards these films as central to his life’s work, describing the project as much more than filmmaking. For him, it is a significant mission to tell what he views as a crucial story in human history.
