On June 16, 2026, President Donald Trump indicated a shift in his diplomatic focus after addressing the conflict with Iran. Having made a framework agreement with Tehran, Trump now aims to resolve Russia’s conflict with Ukraine. He held a promising discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the Group of Seven summit in France.
Despite uncertainties surrounding the Iran deal, Trump stated that “Iran will soon be in the rearview mirror.” During his comments, Trump expressed his willingness to assist Ukraine, urging Russia to negotiate and planning further discussions with Zelenskyy. This change in focus was also highlighted in his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.
This realignment might be seen favorably by European leaders after struggles to keep Trump’s attention on the war, which has been ongoing for over four years. Ukraine has recently showcased its capacity to counter Russia, employing drones and missiles to pierce deeper into Russian territories, affecting the conflict’s dynamics. In retaliation, Moscow has threatened and executed systematic attacks, notably targeting a historic monastery in Kyiv.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer shared thoughts that the situation is evolving, with Ukraine gaining momentum. European leaders hope the pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin grows, supplemented by efforts from Washington. However, despite Ukraine’s increased initiatives, no significant breakthrough has occurred on the battlefield or in negotiations.
Trump remains optimistic, mentioning his “good conversations” with both Putin and Zelenskyy before the summit, suggesting potential resolutions. Previously, Trump committed to settling the conflict swiftly during his campaign. However, no formal meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy was on the agenda at the summit held in the French town of Evian-les-Bains.
Macron emphasized the need to engage the U.S. president in discussions, reinforcing the significance of maintaining diplomatic momentum. Zelenskyy expressed online that enhancing Ukraine’s air defenses and progressing diplomacy to cease Russia’s warfare were central topics. He shared images from a meeting with Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, highlighting the importance of aligning strategies.
Trump’s earlier negotiations lost momentum after he pressured Ukraine to make territorial concessions in line with Russia’s firm demands. After the recent meeting with Zelenskyy, Trump’s comments reflected a more flexible stance, acknowledging the significant losses on both sides and advocating for a settlement.
While previously excluded from negotiations, European leaders are now determined to participate, a stance strongly opposed by Russia. Zelenskyy remains committed to involving European allies, complicating efforts due to ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Europe.
Zelenskyy had suggested a face-to-face encounter with Putin during the summit or in the U.S., an offer which Russia dismissed. The Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, confirmed that no invitation was extended to Putin for the summit, indicating no official communication channels between Moscow and Kyiv. Despite this, American diplomats might visit Russia soon, although no precise dates have been disclosed, with the U.S. still concluding deals with Iran.
