Uruguay Soccer Team Faces Delays and Security Checks in Miami
The Uruguay men’s soccer team encountered another challenge upon their arrival in Miami for the FIFA World Cup. A video circulated on social media shows the team waiting near their bus as security personnel inspect their luggage using sniffer dogs. Some players, like Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte, appeared serious, while others smiled during the inspections.
Although the video’s timing and location remain unclear, several players, including Ronald Araújo, were identified in the footage. They wore the same outfits as seen in broadcasts before the match against Saudi Arabia, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The team faced travel disruptions even before reaching the U.S. They planned to fly from Cancún, close to their training site in Playa del Carmen, to Fort Lauderdale. However, issues with documentation delayed their FIFA-chartered plane, and their alternative flight also encountered setbacks.
A team spokesperson told The Athletic that FIFA was at fault for the delay. FIFA, however, attributed it to an airline permitting error. In a statement, FIFA expressed regret for the inconvenience, explaining they had worked closely with the Uruguayan team and airport officials to quickly resolve the issue and minimize disruption.
The story is still unfolding, and further updates are expected.
