This past Saturday brought unexpected chaos to college football, reminiscent of Indiana almost stealing a win against Ohio State. This turmoil coincides with the sport’s decision to expand the College Football Playoff (CFP) to 24 teams.
Historically, we saw No. 1, No. 2, No. 5, No. 6, No. 7, No. 13, No. 16, and No. 18 ranked teams in the AP Top-25 poll tumble. Among these, five of the top eight teams lost on the same day, marking a first since 1989. The SEC now has no unbeaten teams. Only one remains in the Big Ten and ACC, while the Big 12 has three.
In a standout game, BYU triumphed over Notre Dame in Provo with a 28-24 victory. The final play sparked controversy over the game clock, with the Big 12 acknowledging an error that prevented Notre Dame from executing a final play.
This controversy echoed throughout the day. Georgia faced an upset by visiting Auburn, losing in a game-ending field goal scenario. Miami’s win over Florida State involved a dramatic overtime wherein a completed Hail Mary was overturned due to a holding penalty.
This weekend saw Alabama, Georgia, and Texas all lose, an occurrence not seen since 1996. Notably, Auburn’s victory over Georgia marked the first time an unranked team defeated a No. 1 team on the road since 2007.
Georgia’s loss highlighted the unpredictable nature of the SEC this season. Meanwhile, Tennessee defeated Alabama, keeping the Vols in the race for SEC dominance.
Elsewhere, Ole Miss held Missouri to three points, signaling defensive prowess, while LSU capitalized on Mississippi State’s depleted lineup.
With the impending expansion of the CFP, there are questions about the implications for the regular season. Will games like this still carry the same weight in a 24-team playoff era?
The coming weeks will determine if this level of chaos continues or if it remains a rare spectacle.
