Federal immigration agents detained a Polish immigrant on Tuesday after a dramatic car chase through the quiet streets of Chicago’s Northwest Side. The pursuit ended when the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a tree, as confirmed by federal officials, surveillance footage, and neighbor accounts.
Home security footage shows two dark-colored vehicles chasing a red car along West Grace Street towards the 3800 block of North Olcott Avenue in the Dunning neighborhood. Sirens can be heard in the background, and one vehicle is seen striking the red car near the intersection of Grace and Olcott. The red car then veers onto Olcott, pursued by the other vehicles.
Ice Operation and Apprehension
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the operation aimed to arrest Konrad Wojciech Darlak, labeled as a “criminal illegal alien from Poland” by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Darlak attempted to evade capture, colliding with an ICE vehicle and eventually a tree. He then tried to flee on foot but was apprehended using what the spokesperson called the “minimum amount of force.” An image from a doorbell camera shows the pursuit in progress.
Darlak has a criminal history, including arrests for drug possession, obstruction of justice, domestic battery, and transport of dangerous materials. Previous convictions include retail theft and resisting a peace officer. In 2011, he received a year of community service for resisting a peace officer and domestic battery. More recently, in 2024, he was sentenced to supervision for a DUI charge.
Details of the Pursuit
According to a police report, two ICE agents attempted to detain Darlak as he entered his vehicle on North Nottingham Avenue. Darlak reversed into one agent’s car and sideswiped the other. After a short chase, the pursuit concluded on North Olcott, where Darlak lost control. ICE agents transported him to Loyola Hospital in Maywood for observation.
Community Reaction
The arrest follows another recent federal apprehension in Albany Park, sparking community protests against federal enforcement activities. Last year, the Trump administration’s Operation Midway Blitz led to 3,800 noncitizen arrests and 2,500 deportations in the Chicago area, many without criminal records.
Witness Edward Krueger, who lives near Grace and Olcott, saw two unmarked vehicles involved in the chase. He checked his surveillance footage and witnessed the chase and crash. He observed federal agents detaining a person, with one officer’s vest reading “police” and another displaying “ICE.”
Videos from the scene show masked federal officers near the crashed vehicle while Chicago police secured the area. By the afternoon, the red car remained crumpled against a tree as a tow truck prepared to remove it. Although typically quiet, the street became a scene of law enforcement activity, attracting neighbors and bystanders.
Krueger, a lifelong Chicago resident, moved to the neighborhood in 2023 for its safety and calm. He expressed frustration about the federal operation’s impact on his community. Although he hasn’t encountered problems with immigrants, he’s concerned about federal agents’ actions.
