Dr. Mehmet Oz, Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, recently addressed suspected Medicaid fraud at two senior care centers in New York City. During a crackdown involving multiple agencies, including the FBI, Dr. Oz delivered warning letters to Kent Senior Care and Evergreen Adult Day Care in Flushing, Queens.
Concerns Over Billing Practices
The letters followed suspicions about the facilities’ billing practices. CMS officials made over 80 visits across New York City, challenging employees on questionable billing records and how taxpayer dollars were used. Dr. Oz expressed his concerns about the billing practices, noting that the charges seemed disproportionate to attendance.
At Kent Senior Care, the director faced scrutiny over billing practices. Dr. Oz questioned the accuracy of claims for the facility’s capacity and attendance. Despite the director’s defense, Dr. Oz noted discrepancies between billed services and actual practices.
Discrepancies in Attendance and Transportation Services
The investigation revealed concerns over billing records indicating seniors attended more days than they did. Additionally, specialized transportation services billed for individuals using wheelchairs came under suspicion as no wheelchairs were observed, although the director argued that some attendees had mobility issues.
Dr. Oz also questioned recreational activities funded through Medicaid, criticizing their necessity compared to essential medical services.
Further Investigations at Evergreen Adult Day Care
At Evergreen Adult Day Care, Dr. Oz challenged the reported attendance figures after observing fewer people than claimed. Discrepancies in wheelchair-related billing were also examined, raising further doubts about the facility’s practices.
Oz discovered attendance records for dates beyond the visit, suggesting possible pre-documented entries. Concerns about organized crime involvement in the fraudulent activities were discussed, although specific evidence was not presented.
Response and Broader Actions
New York’s crackdown on Medicaid fraud includes collaborative efforts by state, local, and federal authorities. While initial actions focused on these facilities, enforcement is ongoing, with multiple locations under investigation.
